Hercules

This photo of Hercules, a silverback lowland gorilla living in the Dallas Zoo http://www.dallaszoo.com), won third place in the Advanced category of the Zoo's fourth annual Feathers Fur & Scales Photography Contest. Sadly, Hercules passed away on August 13, 2008.

Ramses

Ramses, a mature male mandrill, seen at the Dallas Zoo (zoo website at http://www.dallaszoo.com). This photo won third place in the Dallas Zoo's 2008 Feathers Fur & Scales Photography Contest, "Advanced" division. Unfortunately Ramses passed away on Sept. 7, 2008.

As we sailed North the Captain treated us with a passage through the Gullet, a very narrow, ice-choked strait between Adelaide Island and the Antarctic Mainland. At one point the views ahead and behind suggested no passage existed in either direction.

On Monday, September 2, we flew from Oslo to Longyearbyen, the largest city on the island of Spitzbergen. Spitzbergen is the largest of a group of islands North of the Norwegian mainland that is known collectively as Svalbard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard).

On the coast near Jökulsárlón, a lagoon filled by melt water and icebergs from Breiðamerkurjökull, the beach is composed entirely of black sand. Chunks of ice of varying sizes decorate the beach. In the photo the rising sun lights up a small piece of sculpted ice as a receding wave provides a reflective surface.

Tasanee Plays

Tasanee, an Asian small-clawed otter, playing in the stream. This photo won the grand prize in the Dallas Zoo's 2017 Feather, Fur, and Scales photography contest.
