Port Lockroy was originally a British base, but was abandoned in 1962. It was reoccupied in 1996, and has been restored and turned into a museum complete with resident staff. The island hosts a study of the impact of people on the penguins. On half the island we can approach as we wish while on the other half, which is clearly roped off, no one is allowed. After a number of years the study, which is ongoing, has found the free mixing of people and penguins has no noticeable impact on their behavior.
The weather at Deception Island was pretty bad, bad enough that launching the Zodiacs for the afternoon landing was too dangerous.
