Penguins establish rookeries where the snow has cleared. At times this means the rookery is quite a distance from the actual shoreline.
During the cruise we experienced snow, rain, sleet, high winds (>60 knots, or 69 mph or 111 km/h), and 8 meter seas. Here snow falls on Ocean Nova as she rests at anchor off Useful Island.
Like porpoises and whales, penguins swim underwater and occasionally jump, a behavior called porpoising. The water was so clear here I could follow the bird as it swam underwater.
